SE Portland Condo Projects: Sunrose
The Sunrose Condo Project: Modern & Minimalist
More than most cities, Portland has several amazing architect & design firms. Today, I explored the brain child of one of them at the Sunrose Condominium project located in SE Portland’s Laurelhurst neighborhood at 28th & E. Burnside. Designed by Holst Architecture, this 32 unit development is perfectly situated in an incredible neighborhood! With the Laurelhurst Theater, Whole Foods, Crema, Esparza’s, Bamboo Sushi & Ken’s Artisan Pizza with in 2 blocks in either direction, this project has proven that design & location are the key components to real estate no matter the market.
Pretty cool little tidbit–Sun & Rosie Wong used to own the property here on SE 28th & Burnside. They turned their then-store into the Hungry Tiger Restaurant…now it’s the Sunrose project. The Wong family did a beautiful job honoring Sun & Rosie!

Portland’s Best Coffee Spots: Try Morning Star Cafe!

The first time I drove by The Morning Star Cafe, I was in my car and unable to stop, park and join the line out the front door but right then and there I added them to my list. Since walking in last week and meeting co-owner Jennifer, I’ve been back three times. Yes, you could say that I like it. It also helps that it’s a mile from my house and right on the morning bridge loop walk–if you side step just a couple of blocks into downtown Portland!
In the restaurant biz now for four years, Jennifer and hubby JD have settled into be a downtown favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner spot. While they’ll be the first ones to admit that owning and running a small biz is hard work, these two are in their element. Super personable, greeting every customer as they walk in, calling them by name along with the ’see you later’ when they leave…adds a pretty cool vibe to any coffee/foodie spot.
They use illy roasters and my cappuccino ala Justin was fab. But I couldn’t stop there. No, I had to go ahead and order the eggs Florentine (with parm and caramelized onions…It was so good, I ordered it again two days later). Poor Justin just might think I was either a stalker or protein deficient. While neither are true–it’s really great to have a great spot close to where I live. And no, they haven’t seen the last of me yet…

Some of the things that make this spot a standout:
- Jennifer & JD work really hard to make as much as possible from scratch!
- Sauces & Dressings are all made there with the freshest of prouduce
- Use local meat and produce as much as possible & organic wherever possible
- Eggs are always cage free.
- WIFI
- Lots of tables plus outside seating
- Happy Hour 3-6pm & check ahead on their hours for holiday weekends.
- Best breakfast bets: Morning Star Bowl, Lunch–Big Cheese & the Fillipe
- In my experience, generous portions!
- Find them on Facebook

A True Portland Gem Hidden in Oak Grove

It’s the 1920’s….and entertaining in your home (The Mallory Estate at the time) just doesn’t give you the entertaining space that you need and want for your guests. What do you do? You envision and create this amazing banquet house (later converted into a home) for all your parties.
Long-time friends and knowledgeable antique dealers saw this home and immediately had to see it. Me? Never have to ask me twice. I get just as amazed as my clients do when something incredible comes on the market. The original gate to the next-door Mallory Estate is still there, the 20-year old ’shed’ would be a perfect spot for men’s cigar night….plus all of the other amazing details. We lingered for over 90 minutes and marveled at every piece of this amazing banquet-house turned home.
Hand hewn oak paneling, 20′ arched ceilings, built-ins, secret windows, pocket doors, windows galore, beautifully planed flooring, hand painted Italian tiles, an oak chandelier from Prague, original stain glass windows….just a few of the details that infuse this stunning retreat in the heart of Oak Grove. Enjoy looking at the beautiful private grounds, and elegant home in the pictures below! Thank you Katy Powell for letting me show off this stunning listing!
